Syrian activists say rebels shot down warplane

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syrian activists said rebels shot down a government warplane over the northern province of Idlib on Thursday, the second time in a week that opposition fighters claimed to have brought down an aircraft in the escalating civil war.

Two activist groups, The Local Coordination Committees and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the plane was seen crashing near the Abu Zuhour air base. Idlib-based activist Alaa al-Din said rebels shot it down with heavy machine guns.

A video broadcast on the pan-Arab satellite station Al-Arabiya shows what appears to be a person parachuting and rebels cheering and claiming he was the pilot. The video's authenticity could not be verified.

The government had no immediate comment, and the report couldn't be independently confirmed. But a brief video clip posted by an Idlib-based rebel group showed the body of a man in an olive-green pilot overall with an apparent head wound. A short distance away lay what appeared to be a white parachute.

The authenticity of the video, dated Aug. 30, could not be independently verified.

Over the past month, President Bashar Assad's regime has been relying much more heavily on air power, escalating the fight with rebels as its ground forces have been stretched thin fighting on many fronts including Syria's two largest cities ? Damascus and Aleppo. The military has conducted air raids on the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo near Turkey as well as the eastern province of Deir el-Zour.

The increased use of air power is likely a factor in the high daily death tolls, which activists say have been averaging 100-250 lately.

Later in the day, Human Rights Watch said government forces have killed scores of civilians over the past three weeks by bombarding at least 10 areas where they were lining up at bakeries near and around Aleppo.

"Day after day, Aleppo residents line up to get bread for their families, and instead get shrapnel piercing their bodies from government bombs," researcher Ole Solvang said in a statement after returning from the northern city.

The rebels' claim of shooting down the warplane on Thursday was the third time this month they said they have brought down a government aircraft.

Earlier this week, the opposition fighters said they shot down a helicopter in the Damascus neighborhood of Jobar while the government confirmed a chopper crashed in nearby area of al-Qaboun. On Aug. 13, rebels claimed to have shot down a regime MiG-23 warplane and captured the pilot in Deir el-Zour. Syria says the pilot ejected after a technical malfunction in the fighter jet.

If the rebel claims are confirmed, it would be another blow to Assad's regime, which has been struggling to put down rebel challenges around the country even though its firepower is far superior to the opposition's.

Rebels appear to be targeting air bases with increasing frequency.

Earlier in the day, the Observatory reported explosions inside the Abu Zuhour air base in Idlib, near where the plane was reported to have been shot down. It added that rebels have captured parts of the compound.

On Wednesday, state news agency SANA reported that government forces repulsed a major rebel attack on a helicopter military base of Taftanaz, also in Idlib province.

Idlib, which borders Turkey, has been one of the major rebel strongholds since last year. Although government troops control the provincial capital, which carries the same name as the province, rebels move freely in towns and villages in the district.

In Iran, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi described the Syrian regime as "oppressive" and called for it to transfer power to a democratic system. He was speaking at the opening of a summit of the 120-member Nonaligned Movement in Tehran.

Morsi's comments angered the Syrian delegation, which walked out in protest, according to Syria's state-run media.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, who is also in Tehran, was quoted by the state-owned Al-Ikhbariya TV as saying: "Morsi's comments violated the traditions of the summit and are considered interference in Syrian internal affairs." He also accused Morsi of "instigating blood shedding in Syria."

Iran is Syria's closest ally in the Middle East.

Morsi is an Islamist from the Muslim Brotherhood, the most powerful political force to emerge from last year's uprising that ousted longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak. The Sunni fundamentalist group opposes Shiite Iran's staunch backing of the Syrian regime and its lethal crackdown on the largely Sunni opposition. Assad belongs to the minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Assad, speaking in a rare TV interview broadcast on Wednesday, said his armed forces will need time to defeat the rebels ? an acknowledgement of the difficulties the military is facing in winning the civil war.

A member of Syria's main opposition group said his comments aimed to explain his security forces' failure in putting down the rebellion. British-based opposition activist Ausama Monajed, who is a member of the Syrian National Council, said in a telephone interview that Assad's statements tried to "justify the failure of the security solution."

"He is trying to boost the morale of his supporters. He is trying to justify the failure of the military solution that has been going on for months," Monajed said. "His comments were addressed to his constituency."

Activists estimate more than 20,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad's began more than 17 months ago.

Why Shreveport Foreclosures Don't Sell | Shreveport Real Estate

Shreveport foreclosures can take a long time to sell, and depress other property values in the meantime. Ever wonder why that house on your street is just sitting there and making the neighborhood look run down?

Why foreclosures don't sellIt?s not hard to spot these un-cared for homes with the peeling paint, overgrown lawns, and bushes that look like they haven?t been trimmed in years. Chances are, they haven?t been.

Some Shreveport foreclosures are taking nine to fifteen months to sell. Rules and regulations can be tough, depending on the state. Fannie Mae deals, for example, adhere to strict guidelines. Once the price is set, it can?t be reduced in the first 30 days, but few buyers are willing to pay full asking price for distressed homes. After a month, the price is lowered incrementally by 5% or 10%. Because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac focus on the bottom line ? and not how a property looks ? this leaves little room for negotiation.

Banks are slammed by high foreclosure volume and the additional scrutiny resulting from improper foreclosures of the past. Some have wondered if banks are concerned about flooding the market with foreclosures, and it now seems that banks are more comfortable foreclosing again.

How much time does it take to settle a typical foreclosure? Try 370 days ? and then add another 180 days before it?s actually sold. That?s more than a year and a half to get a run-down property into the hands of a responsible homeowner. This doesn?t even take into account the delays that can be added if there is a tenant in the property. To gain perspective on how bad things are, the average foreclosure in 2007 took just 150 days to close.

The good news is we should see home sales speed up in the near future. In the first quarter of 2012, a 25% increase in pre-foreclosure sales signaled the tide is turning for how banks deal with distressed homes. Banks are becoming more open to pre-foreclosures because they minimize losses. With pre-foreclosure sales, a property is sold by short sale or auction before the foreclosure process is complete. In the first quarter, the average price of a pre-foreclosure home was $27,000 higher than a foreclosure sale.

What Can Be Done About Shreveport Foreclosures On Your Street?

In the meantime, if there is a foreclosure on your street, or a home that looks like it might fit this category, you don?t have to let it necessarily bring down values in your neighborhood. Talk to your neighbors about taking turns mowing the overgrown yards, and maybe even getting together to trim the shrubbery. Granted, no one likes working for free, especially on someone else?s home, or one owned by a bank, but doing so could help your home?s value in the long run.

If you have questions or concerns about Shreveport foreclosures, and how they might affect your neighborhood, talk to us. We have other tips and advice we can give you to help prevent a foreclosure in your neighborhood from bringing down the value of your home.

Father Geek ? How to Teach Kids the Basics of Investing

GD Star Rating
loading...

By Evan Fischer
Sponsored Guest Contributor

Many parents realize that financial skills are an important part of functioning in the adult world, and so they teach their children about money management from an early age, through offering allowance for chores, setting up a savings account, and eventually showing kids how to balance a checkbook, keep a ledger, and even create a budget. But most adults fail to delve into lessons on investing simply because they don?t necessarily employ or understand the process themselves (although it could be that they just decide to cross that bridge when their kids come to it). However, it is important that children learn the benefits, drawbacks, and strategies involved in making investments for their future, as well as the basic types of investment options that are out there. Too often focus is spent on how to spend?responsibly?and not enough on how to save?intelligently.

Here are a few tips to help you impart this information to your own kids and learn a great deal yourself.

Knowledge is Key

The process starts with knowing your stuff. If you don?t know the first thing about investing, your lessons aren?t likely to be terribly informative. So you should start looking into investments that could benefit your kids now and in the future, such as a 529 account that will allow you to set aside money for each child?s college education, or CDs that your kids can put money into in the short-term in order to begin earning more than they would with a basic savings account. Of course, you will also want to eventually discuss lifetime investments like 401K and Roth IRA plans, as well as the possibility of a rounded portfolio that features stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and so on. But you first need to understand what these types of investing entail, including risks and rewards.

Risks and rewards? Like we see in games? But of course! A lot of this?investment?lingo is super heavy for children and not at all meaningful to them until they are in their teens. Why not play games where economics are part of the overall play? This is a great way to start them at any age to learn the basics through games.

Helping Hands

There are a couple of excellent resources that can help you, both online and in the real world. For example, sites like Investopedia offer tons of information for the novice investor, including definitions of terminology, background and current news on various markets, and even financial tutorials and simulators that can help you and your children explore the ins and outs of the wide world of investing. But if you feel like you want to put your money where your mouth is, you might also talk to professionals like a financial planner or a stock broker. Leading by example is one of the best ways to teach your kids life lessons, so investing in a smart and informed manner could go a long way toward underscoring the benefits of saving and investing money.

The Value of Value

Still, you may face a brick wall when it comes to discussing finances with kids,?especially?if they are younger. Many children don?t deal with money on a daily basis and the lessons you?re trying to teach them may not hold much weight. You can give them information on retirement accounts and basic trading strategies until you?re blue in the face, but it will go in one ear and out the other. For this reason, it helps to have real-world examples. And?understand, of course, we are not suggesting you tell your kids to ?plan now?. This is all about starting the process of education. So start by arranging for your kids to make small investments, be they real or?simulated. Take some money from their savings accounts, match it with your own funds, and purchase short-term certificates of deposit (6 months ? 1 year, for example). Once they mature you can show your kids how their money has grown, which will no doubt make them keen on the prospect of future investments. To speed the process up, complete the exercise using a spreadsheet so as to demonstrate how much the?investment?looks in the simulated future instead of waiting for it to mature. Using a spreadsheet also has the added benefit of creating visual examples such as graphs and pie charts that can help you when teaching as a visual aid.

Good luck. It?s never to early, although it might sound silly to talk Wall Street with a child who still watches?Sesame?Street. Keep in mind, however, that the earlier you start talking about the value of money, the deeper the?lesson?will sink in. For example, you wouldn?t talk about drugs to your kids for the first time seconds before they go to school. By talking about it early, you prepare them early. And a prepared geek is a better geek.

Iran's Khamenei calls nuclear arms use a 'big sin'

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's supreme leader said Thursday that the pursuit of nuclear weapons is a "big and unforgiveable sin" but he insisted Tehran will not abandon its "peaceful" atomic program.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke at a summit of the 120-member Nonaligned Movement. Iran says the gathering of mainly developing nations in Tehran shows that Western sanctions imposed over the nuclear issue have not succeeded in diplomatically isolating Iran.

The United States and its allies suspect Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran considers the use of nuclear weapons to be "a big and unforgiveable sin," said Khamenei, who has the final say on all state matters in Iran.

"I declare that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never been after nuclear weapons and it will never abandon its right for peaceful use of nuclear energy," he added.

Iran insists its nuclear program is meant only for making reactor fuel, medical isotopes and peaceful research. But it refuses to give up uranium enrichment, which can produce both reactor fuel and the core of nuclear warheads, despite offers of fuel from abroad.

Khamenei accused the world powers of hypocrisy, saying they are stockpiling nuclear arms for deterrence and to boost their international dominance.

"Nuclear arms have neither provided security nor boosted political power," Khamenei said in a speech broadcast live on Iranian state TV.

He singled out the United States, calling the U.S. opposition to Tehran's nuclear program a "bitter satire" because of the size of the American nuclear arsenal and the use of atomic bombs in Japan during World War II.

Swagbucks, a site where users earn rewards for performing tasks like watching videos and taking surveys, is expanding with the launch of a new shopping page.

Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Scott Dudelson tells me that there?s clearly money to be made in affiliate shopping programs, but Swagbucks has held off, and instead built ?a large reputable loyalty brand around other Internet activities.? It has also built a profitable, bootstrapped business, with $23 million in revenue last year (not including the shopping launch, he says the company is on-track for $30 million in 2012) and more than 5 million registered users.

Still, shopping is a good fit for the Swagbucks audience, which Dudelson says is dominated by moms ? ?the mommy bloggers, the coupon cutters.? (When I last spoke to Dudelson, he contrasted Swagbucks with a social rewards site like Lockerz, which aims at a younger audience.) The new service is an extension of the general Swagbucks concept ? you start at the Swagbucks shopping site, then follow a link to one of the partner stores, and you earn a certain number of ?swag bucks? (which can be redeemed for rewards) for each dollar you spend. For example, you earn 2 swag bucks for every dollar you spend at Walmart.com, and 4 swag bucks per dollar at Sears. Swagbucks, meanwhile, makes affiliate revenue from your purchases.

Shop and Earn Screenshot

Dudelson says this should disrupt affiliate shopping sites like Ebates and Fatwallet, where users get cash back on their purchases, because at Swagbucks, the experience isn?t limited to shopping, but is instead part of a larger rewards program. The company also plans to add more social features and the ability to gift ?swag bucks? to other users.

Swagbucks has been beta testing the new service with a limited group of users, and launched for everyone this week.

Prodege has developed over 150 on-line reward programs including the web?s most popular rewards destination - Swagbucks.com. Swagbucks.com enables users to earn virtual currency that can be redeemed for real life rewards for everyday actions they take online - from searching the web, to playing games to shopping on-line and many more. Prodege also runs a network of branded rewards portals for some of the most popular brands in the world including World Wrestling Entertainment, KISS, Green Bay Packers,...

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is stepping up for the most important speech of his life, ready to tell an audience of millions that America's best days are ahead after years of "difficulties and disappointments, doubt and despair" under President Barack Obama.

Having grasped the GOP nomination on his second try, after years spent reaching for this moment, Romney will use his speech Thursday night at the Republican National Convention to introduce himself to a large swath of voters just tuning in to the long-running presidential contest and to claw for advantage in a race that could scarcely be any closer.

Romney hinted at his speech themes in a morning fundraising appeal emailed to supporters, and aides said the convention's final night would fill out a portrait of the GOP nominee as a successful businessman, fix-it guy for the 2002 Olympics and trustworthy candidate devoted to his family and faith.

"We believe in America, even though the last four years have been full of difficulties and disappointments, doubt and despair," Romney wrote. "We believe in America, even though President Obama's failed policies have left us with record high unemployment, lower take-home pay, and the weakest economy since the Great Depression."

The GOP nominee spent his morning visiting with extended family ? about 120 people, he guessed ? and tending to the never-ending demand for campaign cash at two meetings with donors.

There was no shortage of advice for Romney from armchair speechwriters on all sides.

Jeb Bush, the brother and son of former presidents, said it was critical for the normally reserved GOP nominee to connect with people on an emotional level ? even if he's never going to be "a new-age kind of guy."

"Where it matters is connecting with other people's concerns," Bush said in a round of morning talk show interviews. Only then, he said, will voters be ready to hear the candidate's case.

Overnight, convention planners transformed the stage, extending it about 12 feet to move the candidate closer to the audience. A clear barrier surrounded the bottom steps.

In a brief preview of Thursday night's speeches, Republican officials said members of the Mormon church, former business associates of Romney, including Staples President Tom Stemberg, and past Olympic athletes will help introduce the Republican candidate.

As part of his introduction, Romney appeared prepared to discuss his Mormon faith in more direct terms than usual, a direction signaled by running mate Paul Ryan on Wednesday night in several allusions to the duo's differing religions but "same moral creed."

The Wisconsin congressman, a deficit hawk who's become the party's darling since joining the ticket, offered a prime-time testimonial Wednesday night setting up Romney's turn on the stage one day later.

White House spokesman Jay Carney couldn't say whether Obama would watch Romney's speech, but said the president was "fully aware" of the happenings in Tampa this week. He declined to say whether Ryan's speech was factually accurate, but criticized Romney's campaign more broadly for distorting Obama's record and policy positions.

"Perhaps when the facts aren't on your side, you ignore the facts," Carney said.

The Obama campaign, for its part, was quick to pick apart Ryan's address, releasing a new Web video with a fact-check of what it said were inaccuracies in the congressman's criticisms of the president, and branding the GOP ticket wrong for the middle class. In the warm-up for Romney's speech, the Democrats also released a second Web video highlighting past criticisms of Romney on his record as Massachusetts governor and his budget priorities.

After a two-day campaign tour through college towns, the president was staying out of the spotlight Thursday, ceding center stage to Romney.

But in an interview with Time magazine released Thursday, Obama said he was hopeful for a more productive second term if re-elected, because "the American people will have made a decision. And, hopefully, that will impact how Republicans think about these problems."

"My expectation is that there will be some popping of the blister after this election, because it will have been such a stark choice," Obama said.

The president added that he needs to do a better job of communicating his goals to the American people ? both during the campaign and what he hopes will be a future inaugural address and more State of the Union speeches. The interview was conducted last week.

If history is a guide, viewership of Romney's speech ? and Obama's address to his Democratic convention next week ? will be surpassed only by the audience for their coming debates.

The first night of the GOP convention drew an estimated 22.3 million TV viewers, the vast majority over 55. The Nielsen ratings company said that figure was down from the 23.1 million who watched the first full night of the 2008 convention, which nominated John McCain. Nielsen said just 1.5 million of those who watched Tuesday's convention session were in the 18-34 age group.

The Republican convention's most rah-rah moments were unfolding as Hurricane Isaac, downgraded to a tropical storm, inflicted floodwaters and misery in rural stretches of nearby Gulf states. The slowly unfolding calamity went unmentioned by most key speakers Wednesday night, although a few asked for Red Cross donations for victims and offered prayers. The GOP had cut the convention's opening day in fear Isaac would strike Tampa, which was spared.

Ryan, 42, came on board the campaign for the White House with a reputation in Washington for taking on the sacred cows in government spending, Medicare prime among them. He's also generated plenty of excitement among conservatives who have never been fully convinced that Romney is one of them. "I think he's a rock star for the Republicans," Allie Burgin, a delegate from Wynnewood, Okla., said before the speech. And that's how he was received on the stage.

Ann Romney, in an interview with WTMJ-TV in Milwaukee taped before Ryan's speech, said Ryan and her husband are a "dynamic duo" who complement one another: "They're both very wonky when it comes to the intricacies of the budget ... You get the two of them together and they're like two pigs in slop."

In his speech, Ryan was particularly cutting in his indictment of the president, even in a convention loaded with anti-Obama rhetoric. "Fear and division are all they've got left," he said. "It all started off with stirring speeches, Greek columns, the thrill of something new. Now all that's left is a presidency adrift, surviving on slogans that already seem tired, grasping at a moment that has already passed."

In a letter sent Thursday morning to potential Democratic donors, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said Ryan's speech "represents a huge bet by the Romney campaign ? they've decided that facts, truth and reality will not be a brake on their campaign message."

Sen. John Kerry, the party's 2004 nominee, also issued a fundraising appeal, saying Democrats need to "respond quickly and powerfully to attacks from the other side." Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, said ads from outside groups attacking his military record were "burned into my memory" and that Romney has far more to spend on advertising this time.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said days earlier that the nominee would discuss his Mormon religion in his convention address as part of "what's informed his values."

Ryan, a Roman Catholic, took up the matter conspicuously, and no doubt as part of the convention's carefully crafted message.

"Mitt and I also go to different churches," he said. "But in any church, the best kind of preaching is done by example. And I've been watching that example. The man who will accept your nomination tomorrow is prayerful and faithful and honorable."

Obama, asked in the Time interview what he admired about Romney, said the GOP nominee "seems to walk the walk and not just be talking the talk when it comes to his participation in his church."

Fore! Ohio Gov. Says Joe Biden Inflates Golfing Prowess

In his address to the Republican National Convention tonight, Ohio Gov. John Kasich talked a lot about policy, about unions, about debt and surpluses and budget deficits. And then, at the end, he turned to a what seems to be a very personal subject among Ohio politicians and the current administration Kasich would like to be see voted out of office: Golf.

"Folks, let me tell you this - Joe Biden disputes a lot of those facts, but Joe Biden told me that he was a good golfer. And I've played golf with Joe Biden, I can tell you that's not true, as well as all of the other things that he says," Kasich said Tuesday at the Republican convention.

Say what? Golf, a little over a year ago, is what was supposed to bring Washington together. Remember the golf summit? That's what Kasich was referring to. Joe Biden, Barack Obama, House Speaker John Boehner and Kasich, in the heat of a fight over how to extend a debt ceiling, played a round together. Here's what ABC wrote in June of 2011:

President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner may be at odds over taxes, the debt ceiling and the conflict in Libya, but for today at least, they put aside their differences for a round of golf.

Obama and Boehner took on Vice President Biden and Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich in a game at Joint Base Andrews' golf course in Maryland.

The game gave the president and the Republican leader four hours to socialize - with or without discussion of the last week's tense negotiations. Both men play regularly, but Boehner is known as one of Capital Hill's best golfers. Boehner was ranked 43rd among 150 prominent Washington golfers, while Obama is 108th.

We didn't mention at the time that Biden is ranked 29 th by Golf Digest. Kasich, who doesn't live in Washington, didn't make the list.

For Biden and Boehner, Kasich's partner for that foursome, golf is still the subject of some congenial banter. Before a special address by President Obama to Congress last September, they talked at the rostrum in the House of Representatives about bogies and birdies at a golf course in San Diego. Boehner lamented a four foot putt.

Watch that here.

or whatever the crisis may be ? has a life of its own. Men and women keep dying, and U.S. policies keep accelerating the centrifugal forces that are driving the country toward civil conflict, which may have profound implications for future regional and international security." ? Sarah Chaynes, a senior associate with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in commentary published Sunday as analysts say that the a public worn down by a war that began just a month after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, no longer cares about Afghanistan, and that the war has slipped off the radar screens and is now considered by many to be over.

Personal Finance Tips For Keeping More Money In Your Wallet ...

To keep your credit from worsening, pay back your credit card debt first. Credit card debt is one of the worst kinds of debt you can have. Any time you have extra money to pay off expenses with, focus on getting your credit card debt squared away. This will keep your cards from hurting your credit score.

One personal finance tip which has stood the test of time is diversification or not putting all your eggs in one basket. The reason for this is simple. You may have some poorly performing investments in your portfolio at any given time, but diversification should also have you invested in some well performing assets as well.

Do your best to keep a good credit score. Pay all your bills on time and pay a little more than the minimum account. Avoid making too many credit inquiries, or have different insurance companies or banks run your credit within the same week to avoid hurting your score badly.

When it comes to taking care of your home, a little maintenance will go a long way. Avoid waiting until major repairs are needed. Instead, regularly replace filters, pipes, wires and other elements as recommended. This will save you the cost of hiring a professional contractor or repairman to complete a major repair service.

To really take control of your personal finances, strive to pay cash for everything. If you avoid using credit cards and bank loans completely, you will be in control. Using credit cards and bank loans means your lenders are in control. Taking this step involves extreme saving and extreme patience. In the end, it is always well worth the effort.

Look for a free checking account, as there is no need to waste money unnecessarily. Get something that has no minimum balance requirement, no transaction fees and no monthly fees. The majority of banks still offer free, no interest checking accounts. Others have checking accounts that can be free if you sign up for direct deposit.

If you are thinking about getting a mortgage, compare interest rates as well as other expenses. For instance, you can pay discount points for your mortgage payments to become cheaper over time. Take in consideration how long you will live in your house to find the best type of mortgage.

Think carefully before making any financial decision. Don?t make a decision based on fear or panic. It is okay for you to stop and take the adequate amount of time you need before you make any kind of decision. That is especially true for large financial decisions. Now you just need to take a deep breath and do the right thing.

It is important to know who, where, what, when and how, about each agency that reports on your credit history. If you do not follow up with each reporter on your credit file, you could be leaving a mistaken account reference on your history, that could easily be taken care of with a phone call.

Think about getting rid of your landline. If you?re like most people you don?t even use your ?regular? phoneline to make the bulk of your telephone calls. If you don?t need the landline, get rid of it. This will keep money in your pocket and chances are you won?t even miss the landline.

You and your children should consider public schools for college over private universities. There are many highly prestigious state schools that will cost you a fraction of what you would pay at a private school. Also consider attending community college for your AA degree for a more affordable education.

Instead of going out to eat every other night or buying new clothes for each special occasion, learn to be thrifty and manage your money. Remember the tips in this article, so that you can start to manage your personal finances and avoid calls from debt collectors on a daily basis.

Will Apple's smaller tablet be called the 'iPad Mini'?

3 hrs.

iPad Mini? iPad Nano? iPad Air??We don't actually know if Apple is even working on a smaller iPad. All we have to go on are?reports from anonymous sources and leaked parts?which are?allegedly?intended for this tablet. But that won't stop rumors about the devices's name from floating around.

CNET's Lance Whitney points out?that?the folks at Japanese blog Macotakara?? who've had a mixed track record when it comes to Apple rumors???say they've got a source who claims that the rumored tablet will be called?the "iPad Mini."

Apple blogger John Gruber has previously dubbed the device the "iPad Air" in passing, while suggesting that it will be announced in October, instead of sharing the spotlight with the next-generation iPhone in September.

"I don?t think Apple would want reviews of both a new iPhone and new-size iPad appearing at the same time," Gruber?writes. "The iPhone is too big, too cool, and garners too much attention ? and it?s in Apple?s interest to keep that attention undiluted."?

AllThingsD's John Paczkowski went with the label "so-called 'iPad Mini'" while explaining that he has "several sources" who confirm that Apple will indeed show off the device in October.?

For what it's worth, we frequently reach out to the folks at Apple and ask them if they're feeling crazy enough to?chit-chat about their upcoming products, but as it's their policy not to address such rumors, we'll have to?keep speculating until Apple sends out invitations to a very special event.?

Improve Customer Experience with Customer Interaction Services ...

Improve Customer Experience with Customer Interaction Services

"Good customers are as rare as Latinum - treasure them" is an old Klingon proverb, but how many
enterprises can actually do that. In today's hypercompetitive business environment, every enterprise across
every industry knows the value of customers. Customers are the lifeblood of any organization and therefore
enterprises must be careful when providing customer services.

All enterprises know the role of customer experience in customer satisfaction, which eventually leads to
customer retention and customer loyalty. Therefore, the first step that enterprises must focus on for
retaining customers is to take control of customer experience and do all that they can to improve customer
experience.

Studies have shown that customer retention has a direct impact on profitability. A recent research by John
Fleming and Jim Asplund indicates that engaged customers generate 1.7 times more revenue than normal
customers do, while having engaged employees and engaged customers return a revenue gain of 3.4 times
the norm.

Every enterprise wants to serve customers satisfactorily by ensuring that the common journeys that a
customer undertakes after purchasing a product is easy smooth and hassle free. However, not all enterprises
could provide services that exceed customer expectations. In such circumstances, what customers require is
effective customer experience solutions that understand their needs and requirements and help them with
industry-specific applications.

A typical consumer journey involves a series of interactions that lead to a specific outcome for the
consumer--one that can be as complex as resolving questions about a first bill or as straightforward as a
credit card fraud alert. With these customer interaction services, the common issues that cause problems for
the consumer and escalate costs for the enterprises are resolved amicably. A global leader in providing
intuitive customer service software and services has come up with a software platform that provides smarter
and more effective multi-channel customer service. It comes with interactive intelligence that powers
insights and improves consumer experiences by building on the past--and ensuring that every new
interaction, with each individual, gets better all the time.

A popular proverb says that if customers have a good experience, they will tell one person but if they have a
bad experience, they will tell ten. However, with effective customer experience solutions, enterprises can
ensure that customers get good experience which they would tell not just one but a whole lot of them.

HBT: Sox, Dodgers finalize deal? |? Favors Boston

UPDATE: The trade has been announced. The Red Sox have traded Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto and cash considerations to the Dodgers for James Loney, Allen Webster, Ivan De Jesus, Jr. and two players to be named later.

Rubby De La Rosa and Jerry Sands are reportedly the players to be named and will join the Red Sox organization following the season. The Red Sox must wait to acquire De La Rosa and Sands because they didn?t clear waivers this month.

1:32 p.m.: OK, it?s done. For real this time. Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reports that the deal is official while Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com hears that Adrian Gonzalez, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto are already on a plane to Los Angeles. No word on if fried chicken is on the in-flight menu.

11:59 a.m.: Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the trade will get done, but that the two sides are waiting for Carl Crawford?s consent paperwork to go through. He has already waived his no-trade clause verbally, so it?s just a formality at this point.

Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston, who has been all over this trade, hears that an an official announcement is expected at some point this afternoon.

10:00 a.m.: So much for that. According to Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, the mega-deal is not yet official and reports of it being complete are premature. Still sounds like it will get done, but we might have to wait a little while longer.

9:32 a.m. ET: According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, the nine-player blockbuster trade between the Red Sox and Dodgers is complete. Dan Roche of WBZ is also reporting that the trade is done. Let?s go over the particulars.

The Red Sox are sending first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, right-hander Josh Beckett, outfielder Carl Crawford and infielder Nick Punto to the Dodgers for first baseman James Loney and four minor leaguers. Those prospects are expected to consist of right-handers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster, first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan De Jesus, Jr., though one or more of them could be announced as players to be named later and be sent to Boston after the season. Crawford and Beckett both waived their no-trade clauses in order for the deal to go through.

The Red Sox will get an incredible amount of financial flexibility as a result of the deal, as Silverman reports that the club will cover just $12 million of the roughly $271.5 million left on the contracts of Gonzalez, Beckett, Crawford and Punto. Those payments will begin next year.

This deal will be viewed as a salary dump in many circles and considering the unprecedented amount of money involved, that?s certainly understandable, but Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington comes out looking pretty good after getting De La Rosa and Webster back in the deal. Each team is essentially getting what they want here, as the Red Sox want to press the reset button and the new Dodgers ownership wants to send the message that they are in it to win it. The deal improves the Dodgers? chances of making a run in the postseason this year, but it might not look so hot a couple of years from now. Dodgers fans are surely hoping the new ownership has enough money set aside to keep Clayton Kershaw around for the long haul.

What To Do if Your Child Swallows a Magnet

Credit: Amazon

Dr. Robert Noel, an associate professor of pediatrics in the Gastroenterology Division at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center New Orleans, offered these tips for parents and caregivers who might have magnet toys in their home or suspect their child has swallowed a magnet.

Because magnet toys have industrial strength magnetic force, they find each other, or anything else made of metal, inside the body just as easily as outside. The tissue is trapped between which can result in:

  • Holes in the tissue of the esophagus, stomach, intestines
  • Infection
  • Fistulas
  • Bowel Obstructions
  • Tissue Death
  • Death

Tips for Parents, Caregivers Who Have Magnet Toys in Their Home:

  • If you have children and are not using these magnets then dispose of them safely.
  • If you have them and are still using them then put them away in a safe place preferably in a locked cabinet or locked container but definitely out of the reach of children.
  • If you have adolescent that use these magnets educate them on safe use and storage of the magnets when not in use. Especially emphasize that younger siblings should not be allowed to touch these magnets.
  • Educate your older children and teens about the risks of swallowing these magnets. Never permit them to use these magnets as face, body or mouth jewelry (such as to mimic piercings)
  • If you have these magnet toys in your house, count them when you first use them, and count them each time before you put them away to account for all of them.
  • Encourage your child to tell you immediately if an accident happens and he or she swallows a magnet or sees another child swallow one.
  • Regularly check toys and play areas, including carpeting, for dislodged or lost magnets.
  • Run another magnet or an object made of a ferrous metal around play areas, couches, chair cushions, etc. to pick up lost magnets.
  • Consider using these magnets in a contained space such as on a tray where loose magnets can be contained to prevent them from dropping on the floor, carpet or into or under furniture.
  • If you cannot account for all magnets after they have been out and used then evaluate the possibility that a child could have accidentally swallowed them.
  • If it is possible that a young child could have swallowed them then immediately seek medical attention. Symptoms maybe not present or minimal until there is significant injury.
  • Do not delay an evaluation if magnet ingestion is possible since substantial injury can occur within hours of ingestion.
  • Don?t assume a swallowed magnet will pass normally. These magnets are very likely to be attracted to one another and trap intestine between them causing them to become stuck inside your child. abc payton bushnell xray ss jp 120305 ssv Magnet Toys: What To Do if Your Child Swallows a Magnet

Three-year-old Payton Bushnell of Oregon underwent surgery after swallowing a total of 37 Buckyball magnets, commonly sold together as a desktop toy. Doctors said the girl likely would have died had it not been for the operation, as some of the magnets had already torn several holes in her intestines and stomach. What You Should Do if You Suspect That Your Child Has Swallowed a Magnet:

  • If you think your teenager, toddler or child has swallowed these magnets, immediately seek medical attention by calling your doctor or go to the emergency department.
  • Don?t assume a swallowed magnet will pass normally.
  • If your child has any unexplained stomach symptoms and these magnets are present in your household then consider the possibility that they have swallowed these magnets and take them to the emergency room for a x-ray evaluation.
  • If the doctor says he sees only a single magnet on the x-ray and it is alright for your child to go home, make sure he has a taken at least two different x-ray views. Two magnets trapping a piece of intestine between them can appear as one magnet when one magnet is behind the other in an x-ray picture.

Family of slain toddler responds

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The family of a slain toddler is responding to surprising information released Friday in court documents.

It's a traumatic time for the grandmother of three-year old Carmen Ellis.

Carmen was three years old. She loved watching Dora the Explorer, singing with the radio, and riding her pink Jeep.

Jose Cruz admits he beat the child mercilessly - even after the baby lost consciousness and began convulsing. He said he was angry because Carmen had soiled her pants.

The probable cause affidavit reveals the baby had "severe bruising to her face, legs, and back." A pediatrician at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health told police he knew immediately the injuries were "non-survivable."

But in court Friday, Cruz expressed concern not for the baby's family, but for himself. Cruz told the judge he thought he had a week to live because there was a hit on him. The judge told him that was unlikely in solitary confinement.

When 24-Hour News 8 told Tina Ellis, Carmen's grandmother, that Cruz was afraid for his safety she responded, "As well he should be. Anybody that harms a child should fear for their life."

But the affidavit reveals disturbing information about Ellis' daughter Samantha. Police say the Samantha Ellis, Carmen's mother, suspected Cruz was beating her child but the affidavit reads: "Samantha was afraid to take Carmen to the hospital by herself for fear that Jose would be mad at her and take it out on her."

Tina Ellis says her daughter neither expressed fear nor suspicions about her boyfriend, Jose Cruz. When asked if it's possible her daughter, Samantha, failed to protect Carmen from Cruz, Tina answered, "I don't know."

What she does know is that next week she will have to bury a baby she loved dearly. And she's comforted in her belief that Carmen is in a place where she suffers no more.

"I know she's up there looking down on us, and she knows that we all loved her," said Tina.

A private funeral will be held Tuesday, Aug. 28. Tina says the family needs help with burial expenses.

Donations to the Carmen Ellis Memorial Fund can be made at any PNC Bank, or can be mailed to PNC Bank, 6505 West Broadway, McCordsville, IN, 46055.

As for Cruz, his pre-trial is scheduled for Nov. 14 with a trial date of Nov. 19.

Walmart joins iPhone price cut parade, as new model looms

Editor?s Note: The following article is reprinted from the Today @ PC World blog at PCWorld.com.

Smartphone retailers are scrambling to get as many iPhone 4 and 4S devices out the door as possible before an expected debut of a new iPhone model in September.

If you?ve always wanted an iPhone, or looking for an upgrade, but were unwilling to plunk down $200 for the latest 16GB model of Apple?s smartphone, now is a good time to go iPhone shopping.

Several retailers are offering deals from $50 to $150 (depending on the model) for an iOS smartphone with a new, two-year contract. The deals come amid reports that Apple will hold a September 12 press event with new versions of its smartphones arriving within a few weeks of that date.

Here?s a look at the latest iPhone deals available near you, as well as a few tips on how you can turn your old iPhone into cash.

Walmart

The latest retailer to sweeten the iPhone pot is Walmart, which offers the 16GB iPhone 4S for $148. Wally World was selling the same device for $188 earlier this year, which is cheaper than most competitors that sold the handset at Apple?s standard $200 with a new, two-year contract.

But with more drastic iPhone price drops showing up, Walmart decided to cut its price even further. The $148 can be yours on AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon as long as supplies last. This deal is in-store only.

Sprint

AT&T and Verizon are still charging full price for the iPhone 4S starting at $199, but Sprint is offering the 16GB iPhone 4S for $150. You can also save yourself $50 at Sprint with the 32GB iPhone 4S for $250 or the 64GB handset for $350. To sweeten this deal even more, Sprint is offering a $100 American Express gift card with every online smartphone purchase until August 26.

Target

Similar to Sprint, Target Mobile offers the iPhone 4S for $150 with AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon. This deal is in-store only.

Best Buy

If you want to spend as little as possible without dropping down to a free iPhone 3GS, Best Buy is currently offering the 8GB iPhone 4 for $50 (AT&T and Verizon) instead of the usual $100. You?ll get the same high-resolution Retina display as the iPhone 4S, but no Siri integration.

Apple Store

For people who?d prefer to get their phone at an Apple Store, the company is willing to match the prices you?ll find at some of the retailers above.

You can get a 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB iPhone 4S for $150, $250, or $350, respectively. But these lower prices aren?t advertised, so you?ll have to ask your sales representative about Apple?s price-matching policy. Apple?s deal is in-store only and not available online.

Trade-ins

If you?re thinking about dumping your old iPhone for a cheaper iPhone 4S or in anticipation of the ?iPhone 5??or whatever it is that Apple calls its next phone?then now is the time to get the ball rolling on your trade-in.

Some electronics trade-in dealers offer a price lock guarantee, meaning you can sign up to sell your phone now, and not worry about the value dropping the closer we get to the date of the expected new iPhone launch.

Trade-in site Nextworth, for example, has a 21-day price lock-in and is currently offering $300 for an AT&T 16GB iPhone 4S that is fully functional and doesn?t have a cracked display.

The trade-in dealer is offering $274 for a Sprint or Verizon model. If you own an iPhone 4, Nextworth offers $175 for a 16GB device locked to AT&T.

Gazelle has a price lock-in on the iPhone until October 1. For a 16GB iPhone 4S on AT&T in good condition, you can get $280 for it and $254 for your old phone on the other two carriers. You can also get $159 for a 16GB AT&T iPhone 4 and $132 for the 8GB Sprint/Verizon version.

Assuming Apple keeps to its current pricing structure, a new iPhone may mean the iPhone 4S drops to just $100 with a new two-year contract, the same price Apple is currently offering for the iPhone 4.

The downside, however, is that Apple typically offers just 8GB of storage capacity on these lower end models. So if you want an iPhone 4S with 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB, now is the time to go deal hunting.
