AP sources: US to sell F-15s to Saudi Arabia

(AP) ? The Obama administration is poised to announce the sale of nearly $30 billion worth of F-15 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The deal will send 84 new fighter jets and upgrades for 70 more, for a total of $29.4 billion, according to the officials, who requested anonymity because the sale has not been made public.

The agreement boosts the military strength of Saudi Arabia, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, at a time when the Obama administration is looking to counter Iranian threats in the region. Underscoring that effort was a fresh threat this week from Tehran, which warned that it could disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital Persian Gulf oil transport route, if Washington levies new sanctions targeting Iran's crude oil exports.

About a year ago, the administration got the go-ahead from Congress for a 10-year, $60 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia that included F-15s, helicopters and a broad array of missiles, bombs and delivery systems, as well as radar warning systems and night-vision goggles.

The plan initially raised concerns from pro-Israeli lawmakers, but U.S. officials reassured Congress that Israel's military edge would not be undercut by the sale. Additionally, there is now broad agreement among Israel, the Gulf Arab states and the West that Iran poses a significant and unpredictable threat.

Saudi Arabia and Iran are bitter regional rivals. Tensions between them were further stoked earlier this year after the U.S. accused Iran of plotting to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. in Washington.

Saudi Arabia is already the most militarily advanced of the Arab Gulf states, one of the richest countries in the world, and central to American policy in the Middle East. It is also vital to U.S. energy security, with Saudi Arabia ranking as the third-largest source of U.S. oil imports.

Magnetic Sense Shows Many Animals the Way to Go (preview)

Animals' magnetic sense is real. Scientists are zeroing in on how it works

Image: Photograph by Christopher Griffith

In Brief

  • Dozens of animal species, from ants to whales, have well-documented abilities to detect the geomagnetic field and use it for orientation and navigation.
  • After some false starts, researchers may have now located the organs for this magnetic sense, and they are finally understanding the physics that underpins it.
  • Some animals may use microscopic magnetic particles to detect magnetic fields; others might harness quantum effects on certain pigments in the eye.

For what must have felt like an interminable six months back in 2007, Sabine Begall spent her evenings at her computer, staring at photographs of grazing cattle. She would download a satellite image of a cattle range from Google Earth, tag the cows one by one, then pull up the next image. With the help of her collaborators, Begall, a zoologist at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany, ultimately found that the unassuming ruminants were on to something. On average, they appeared to align their bodies with a slight preference toward the north-south axis. But they were not pointing to true north, which they could have located using the sun as reference. Instead they somehow knew how to orient themselves toward the magnetic north pole, which is hundreds of kilometers south of the geographic pole, in northern Canada.

Jildy, Whose Patents Google Owns and Facebook Licenses, Launches Its First App

When the early social search engine Wowd started to wind down last year, its assets were divided among three parties: Facebook, which ?acqhired? seven of its engineers and licensed its technology; Jildy, a new start-up created by a Wowd co-founder and backed by Wowd?s venture capitalists, that also licensed the technology; and a ?large public company? that bought the patents outright.

Public records now show the buyer was Google.

So yes, indeed, there is a body of social search intellectual property ? around things like user-driven ranking of Web pages and a distributed file system ? that three companies have the rights to use: Google, Facebook and the virtually unknown start-up Jildy.

Last week Jildy released its very first product: An iPhone app for clustering and sorting Facebook friends and status updates.

It?s kind of similar to Katango, a friend-sorting app?that Google recently bought for an undisclosed sum.

The Jildy interface is rudimentary and so far only includes Facebook data, but it already provides some interesting tools to those who want to slice and dice their social streams.

Jildy gives users tools to monitor four types of lists:

  1. keyword-based searches of their friends? status messages that they can set up manually
  2. algorithmically created lists of friends who are friends with each other (this is like what Katango did, but Jildy users can both read and write to the lists of people)
  3. demographically created lists, like male friends and female friends, or San Francisco friends and New York friends
  4. any lists that users have already created on Facebook

Then, Jildy tries to find out the top five to seven people or topics within each of those lists, so a user can quickly dive in and see what?s happened recently.

In the next couple of weeks, Jildy plans to add notifications. So for instance, said Jildy?s Mark Drummond (the co-founder and former CEO of Wowd), a user could be alerted every time a friend mentions a term like ?skiing,? ?snowboarding? or ?Tahoe,? the better to facilitate serendipitous meet-ups on the slopes.

Other upcoming additions should include Twitter and LinkedIn data. Drummond said he also thinks it?s important to help users edit their friend lists to stay updated as social circles change.

On a larger note, the patent wars that plague the mobile device industry haven?t crept into social networking yet, aside from a few defensive buys throughout the years, like the Friendster portfolio?(now owned by Facebook)?and the Six Degrees patent?(bought by LinkedIn?s Reid Hoffman and Zynga?s Mark Pincus, when Pincus was at Tribe.net).

But all the interest in the Wowd patent portfolio ? which, to be clear, has not yet been used to build a successful social search product ? shows that giants like Facebook and Google are attentively shoring up access to intellectual property in case social patent wars do break out.

It?s kind of ironic (and maybe even a good thing, if you don?t like software patents) that the two rivals have rights to use the very same technology from the same defunct start-up.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Jildy has seven employees and $650,000 from Draper Fisher Jurvetson and KPG Ventures. To be specific, it has non-exclusive licenses to three awarded patents and six patent applications from Wowd, and owns three more Wowd patents. Drummond said Wowd is in the process of becoming a liquidating trust.

Bitcoins: A Decentralized Digital Currency?

By: Katherine Thorsteinson, Staff Writer

The new currency?

via TraderTim, Flickr

In the wake of a global double dip recession the world is screaming ?Show me the money!? However, the response to this demand is widely varied. There are those involved with Operation Occupy Wall Street, those like libertarian Ron Paul advocating a zero percent income tax policy and reversion to the gold standard, and finally there is the more traditionally moderate position of slow recovery and little systematic change.

With all this opposition and disagreement the really interesting question becomes, what will this money begin to look like? Currently, things are not likely to change in this regard, but one very novel invention seems to be indicating where money may take us in the future. Can you imagine a totally decentralised digital currency? Welcome to the world of Bitcoins. In the spirit of anonymity upheld by this new currency, its 2009 invention has been attributed to the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. But to whom this might be or to how many people this may include is entirely unknown.

To some, this may sound like the perfect answer to many of our current economic difficulties?

Bitcoins are an online currency which may be exchanged in a virtual value system with other users around the world. Bitcoin.org tells us that, ?Compared to other alternatives, Bitcoins have a number of advantages. Bitcoins are transferred directly from person to person via the net without going through a bank or a clearing house. This means that the fees are much lower, you can use them in every country, your account cannot be frozen, and there are no prerequisites or arbitrary limits.?

// ]]>

To some, this may sound like the perfect answer to many of our current economic difficulties in which the world?s greatest superpower relies on a Federal Reserve Bank that remains suspiciously not federal. But how exactly do these new Bitcoins work? Somewhat allusively, Bitcoin.org explains that ?Bitcoins are generated all over the internet by anybody running a free application called Bitcoin miner.? To ?mine? your Bitcoin a certain amount of ?work? is required.

The network automatically adjusts the amount of Bitcoins earned per amount of work completed so that they are always being produced at a predictable and limited rate. To transfer your Bitcoins, the program adds an electronic signature, and within minutes this transaction will be certified by another member miner. This entire transaction is then stored in the network permanently and anonymously. Because this software is open-sourced, anybody has rights to access the code.

In spite of this explanation, for many this system will remain troubling and elusive. Indeed, difficulties have already surfaced. Due to a number of factors, including the currency?s short life-span and user uncertainty, Bitcoin continues to display a highly volatile rate of exchange into USD, and this problem is only amplified by the inability to make use of futures or options. There are a number of online businesses and exchange markets that are already accepting Bitcoin.

However, different users are quoting widely different exchange rates for any given time, suggesting that value in the Bitcoin market is not so evenly distributed. More technical concerns have been raised about the security of such online currencies in the face of a growingly competent hacking community. Others have wondered to what extent Bitcoin is a viable alternative to our current financial crises. After all, critics ask, isn?t it troubling that our value system has strayed so far from the real, physical modes of production and service? It is unclear whether this new financial option could assess these more psychological considerations.

For all its novel interest and seemly good intentions, this currency remains somewhat of a play thing for those involved with or curious about computer programming and economics. Considering how drastically different Bitcoins are from our current system, it is unlikely for the moment that this ?change? is going to come.

Kim Jong Un dubbed "supreme leader" of military

(AP)?

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea hailed Kim Jong Il's son as "supreme leader" of the 1.2-million strong military, ramping up its campaign to install the young man as the next leader of the communist nation even as millions continue mourning the father a week after his death.

Kim Jong Un made a third visit Saturday to the palace where his father's body is lying in state ? this time as "supreme leader of the revolutionary armed forces" and accompanied by North Korea's top military brass, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.

The new title and public show of support from the military leadership sent a strong signal that the nation will maintain Kim Jong Il's "military first" policy for the time being.

Earlier Saturday, the newspaper Rodong Sinmun, mouthpiece of the ruling Workers' Party, also recognized the young man's authority over the military by calling him "supreme commander" of the armed forces.

Kim Jong Un, who is in his late 20s and was unveiled in September 2010 as his father's choice as successor, will be the third-generation Kim to rule the nation of 24 million. His father and grandfather led the country under different titles, and it remains unclear which other titles will be bestowed on the grandson.

Kim Il Sung, who founded North Korea in 1948, retains the title of "eternal president" even after his death in 1994.

Son Kim Jong Il ruled as chairman of the National Defense Commission, supreme commander of the Korean People's Army and general secretary of the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong Un was promoted to four-star general and appointed a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party. He had been expected to assume a number of other key posts while being groomed to succeed his father.

His father's death comes at a sensitive time for North Korea, which was in the middle of negotiations with the U.S. on restarting talks to dismantle the North's nuclear weapons program in exchange for aid, and had been preparing for 2012 celebrations marking Kim Il Sung's 100th birthday. Suffering from a shortfall in basic staples after several harsh seasons, officials also had been asking for help feeding its people.

North Korea has emphasized the Kim family legacy during the sped-up succession movement for Kim Jong Un. State media invoked Kim Il Sung in declaring the people's support for the next leader, comparing the occasion to Kim Jong Il's ascension to "supreme commander" exactly 20 years ago Saturday.

At the Kumsusan Memorial Palace, Kim Jong Un and senior commanders paid silent tribute to the late leader, "praying for his immortality," KCNA said. The military also pledged its loyalty to Kim Jong Un, the report said.

"Let the whole army remain true to the leadership of Kim Jong Un over the army," KCNA reported ? a pledge reminiscent of those made when Kim Jong Il was named supreme commander.

The call to rally behind Kim Jong Un, dubbed the "Great Successor" in the wake of his father's death on Dec. 17 from a heart attack, comes amid displays of grief across North Korea. The country is to remain in an official state of mourning until after Kim's funeral Wednesday and a memorial Thursday.

In Pyongyang, mourners continued Saturday to bow and lay flowers at Kim's portrait at plazas and government buildings, including the Pyongyang Circus Theater and Kim Il Sung Square, even as temperatures dropped to 14 degrees below Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit).

At the April 25 People's Army House of Culture, workers at beverage kiosks handed steaming cups of water to shivering mourners, including children bundled up in colorful thick parkas. A sign urged mourners to thaw out inside a heated bus.

The order to provide food and warming huts for mourners came from Kim Jong Un, officials said.

Microsoft responds to Xbox profile problems

Microsoft

By Kyle Orland

A recent update to the Xbox 360 dashboard has been preventing some owners from using their systems online, according to online reports, an issue Microsoft vows to "resolve ... as soon as possible."

Since Microsoft released its newly redesigned, video-packed Xbox dashboard earlier this month, some users have reported errors with code "801540B7" or?"80070571"?when they try to download their Xbox Live profile from Microsoft's servers. Without a valid Live profile, these users can't connect for online play, or access downloaded games and save data associated with the account.

In a statement to gaming blog Joystiq, Microsoft admitted that a "small number of Xbox Live members" have been receiving the?errors.?"We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to our loyal Xbox Live members and are working to resolve the issue as soon as possible."

But that might not be soon enough for some owners. The Verge points to a thread on the Xbox support forums where one user quotes an Xbox tech support representative saying it will take on average "approximately 10-12 days for the escalation team to respond" to these issues, meaning users could be unable to play during the upcoming holiday break.

Watch Out for This "Unlock Your Debit Card" Text Message [Scams]

Watch Out for This "Unlock Your Debit Card" Text MessageIt's that time of year?you know, not the time for holiday cheer but for people to try to scam you out of your hard-earned money. One of the latest tricks, according to CBS Chicago, is a text message claiming your debit card is locked and you need to call a specific number to unlock it. Hint: don't do it.

The text message looks something like this:

FW:|Fifth Third B. Message. Your card has been locked. Call 519-555-9910 to unlock it.

In the event you get one of these messages, it's best to call your bank and confirm there's nothing wrong. My bank sends me lock notices like this via email and I have the option of receiving them via text, so it's best not to ignore it if you think there may actually be a problem. Just don't call the number in the message. Instead, call the number on the back of your debit card and ask to be connected to fraud prevention services (or whatever your bank calls that department) and make sure everything is alright. And while you're on hold, brush up on these debit card and ATM security tips.

Tottenham knocked out of Europa League

By GRAHAM DUNBAR

updated 5:30 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2011

Tottenham was eliminated from the Europa League despite a 4-0 victory at Ireland's Shamrock Rovers on Thursday night as Rubin Kazan advanced to the knockout stage with a tie. Birmingham also was knocked out, one day after Fulham exited.

Udinese advanced to Friday's draw for the 32-team second round. Needing to avoid defeat at home against Glasgow Celtic, Udinese tied 1-1 after Antonio Di Natale equalized in first-half stoppage time. The Scottish club had led on Gary Hooper's 29th-minute goal.

Tottenham was in position to advance when leading 3-0 in Dublin while the Russians trailed 1-0 at Group A leader PAOK.

Rubin goalkeeper Sergei Ryzhikov was ejected for conceding a 16th-minute penalty kick scored by Vieirinha. But Rubin's Nelson Valdez tied the score in the 48th for a 1-1 draw.

That result made it academic when Harry Kane scored Tottenham's last goal. Steven Pienaar, Andros Townsend and Jermain Defoe had built a 3-0 halftime lead.

Tottenham reached the Champions League quarterfinals last season, but often failed to use regular starters in Europe's second-tier competition.

"We haven't not gone through for lack of trying," manager Harry Redknapp said. "It was disappointing. I want to win every game."

Redknapp also drew attention for apparently directing a gesture toward Shamrock fans who had targeted him with taunting chants for much of the match.

Hannover progressed to the final 32 by beating Vorskla 3-1 in Group B.

Brugges drew 1-1 with Braga as both progressed from Group H and edged out Birmingham, which beat Maribor 1-0. AZ Alkmaar advanced with a 1-1 draw at home against Group G winner Metalist Kharkiv. The Dutch club finished ahead of Austria Vienna, which beat last-place Malmo 2-0.

Cesaria Evora Dead: 'Barefoot Diva,' Grammy-Award Winning Singer From Cape Verde, Dies At Age 70

LISBON, Portugal ? Cesaria Evora, who started singing as a teenager in the bayside bars of Cape Verde in the 1950s and won a Grammy in 2003 after she took her African islands music to stages across the world, died Saturday. She was 70.

Evora, known as the "Barefoot Diva" because she always performed without shoes, died in the Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo, on her native island of Sao Vicente in Cape Verde, her label Lusafrica said in a statement on its website. It gave no further details.

Evora retired in September because of health problems. In recent years she had had several operations, including open-heart surgery last year.

She sang the traditional music of the Cape Verde Islands off West Africa, a former Portuguese colony. She mostly sang in the version of creole spoken there, but even audiences who couldn't understand the lyrics were moved by her stirring renditions, her unpretentious manner and the music's infectious beat.

Her singing style brought comparisons to American jazz singer Billie Holiday. "She belongs to the aristocracy of bar singers," French newspaper Le Monde said in 1991, adding that Evora had "a voice to melt the soul."

Evora's international fame came late in life. Her 1988 album "La Diva Aux Pieds Nus" ("Barefoot Diva"), recorded in France where she first found popularity, launched her international career.

Her 1995 album "Cesaria" was released in more than a dozen countries and brought her first Grammy nomination, leading to a tour of major concert halls around the world and album sales in the millions.

She won a Grammy in the World Music category of the 2003 awards for her album "Voz D'Amor".

Evora, known to her close friends as Cize (pronounced see-ZEH), was the best-known performer of "morna," Cape Verde's national music. It is a complex, soulful sound, mixing an array of influences arising from the African and seafaring traditions of the 10 volcanic islands.

Evora was born Aug. 27, 1941, and grew up in Mindelo, a port city of 47,000 people on the island of Sao Vicente, where sailors from Europe, America, Africa and Asia mingled in what was a lively cosmopolitan town with a fabled nightlife.

The local musical style borrowed from those cultures, defying attempts to classify it.

"Our music is a lot of things," Evora told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview at her home. "Some say it's like the blues, or jazz. Others says it's like Brazilian or African music, but no one really knows. Not even the old ones."

Evora was 7 years old when her father died, leaving a widow and seven children. At 10, with her mother unable to make ends meet, she was placed in an orphanage.

"I didn't like it. I value my freedom," she told the AP.

At 16, when Evora was doing piecework as a seamstress, a friend persuaded her to sing in one of the many sailors' taverns in her town. As her popularity grew, she was also rowed out into the bay to sing on anchored ships.

She received no pay ? just free drinks. She used to smile when she recalled her fame as a heavy cognac drinker. And she sadly recalled the exact day ? Dec. 15, 1994 ? she had to give up drinking for her health's sake.

Evora didn't think much of her international stardom and she went back to Mindelo whenever she could. She rebuilt her childhood home, turning it into a 10-bedroom house where friends and family often stayed over, and she always made sure she was home for Christmas.

A heavy smoker for decades, Evora was diagnosed with heart problems in 2005. She suffered strokes in 2008 and in September 2011, when she announced she was retiring.

She had a son and a daughter by different men but never married. Family details were not immediately available.

GSM Galaxy Nexus 4.0.2 update rolls out, matches its cousin on Verizon

After the Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus finally appeared and was (almost) immediately updated yesterday, it enjoyed the briefest of possible periods as the highest official Android version available. Now, owners of GSM-equipped Galaxy Nexus phones are getting the same bundle of tweaks shoved their way in a quick 8.7MB download. Of course, even these pure(r) Nexus phones are still slightly behind the bleeding edge represented by v4.0.3, which was unveiled earlier today and almost simultaneously made available on the Nexus S -- isn't Android great?

Romney intensifies criticism of Gingrich (AP)

IOWA CITY, Iowa ? His attacks growing ever more personal, Mitt Romney on Wednesday questioned chief rival Newt Gingrich's temperament, spending habits and allegiance to both the GOP and the middle class while hecklers confronted Gingrich in the lead-off caucus state.

During a series of interviews while fundraising in New York, Romney told one media outlet that "zany is not what we need in a president" and another that Gingrich had "an extraordinary lack of understanding of how the economy works." To yet another, Romney mocked Gingrich's past accounts at a tony jeweler, saying: "He's a wealthy man - a very wealthy man. If you have a half-a-million-dollar purchase from Tiffany's, you're not a middle-class American."

Romney's campaign also rolled out an Internet video describing Gingrich as an unreliable conservative and using a clip of a climate change ad that the former House speaker filmed with House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.

Gingrich, in turn, sought to stay above the fray.

"They should run their campaign the way they want to and we're going to run our campaign the way we want to," Gingrich told reporters after an event at the University of Iowa.

During a speech on brain science research, Gingrich stuck to his usual campaign pitch and made no mention of Romney's charges. But the thrice-married Gingrich, who has admitted infidelity, faced criticism from his audience.

A handful of protesters drowned him out for at least three minutes, assailing Gingrich for what they called a "callous attitude toward poor people." He watched impassively from the podium in a university auditorium while the protesters shouted. But he couldn't resist responding when one person accused him of making millions of dollars on book deals and earning a "Ph.D. in cheating on your wives."

"Other than personal hostility, how would you know anything about how I publish my books?" Gingrich retorted.

While Gingrich held his fire, former Gov. Mike Huckabee ? who won the Iowa caucuses four years ago with strong support from social conservatives ? took a veiled swipe at Romney after he skipped an anti-abortion movie screening Huckabee hosted in Des Moines.

"I do want you to take note. There were four candidates who cleared their schedules and made this a priority event," Huckabee told several hundred abortion opponents to applause.

The latest attacks from Romney ? and the criticism from Iowans ? come as the candidates prepare to square off Thursday at the final debate before the Jan. 3 caucuses and pressure increases on Romney, the one-time GOP front-runner, to curb Gingrich's rise. There's only one week for Romney to make his pitch ? and tear down Gingrich ? before many voters tune out over the Christmas and New Year holidays.

Much of the Iowa campaign is being waged on the air, with campaigns and their allied super PACs spending millions in TV advertisements this week alone. Meanwhile, campaigns are readying get-out-the-vote operations to ensure supporters turn out to precinct meetings on what's likely to be a frigid Midwestern winter weeknight.

Polls show most Iowans are undecided about which candidate to support or at least willing to change their minds, underscoring the volatility of the race.

For now, Gingrich, whose campaign imploded earlier this year, leads the field in Iowa surveys even as he races to build a campaign infrastructure. Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul trail him in surveys, while others ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum ? are working to break through with aggressive face-to-face campaign efforts.

To that end, Perry started a thousand-mile bus tour on Iowa's western edge Wednesday, telling a small group of supporters in Council Bluffs that the nation needs an outsider as president ? hitting both Gingrich and Romney at the same time.

"Changing one Washington insider for another Washington insider isn't going to change a thing. Sending a Wall Streeter to Washington is not going to change a thing," said Perry, who is scheduled to campaign in Iowa daily except for a short break around Christmas as he looks for a late-game surge.

During an evening stop at a Denison restaurant, Perry again made his outsider's appeal and asked a supporter from Texas, Dan Moran, to say a few words.

"He will always, always embody the motto of the Marines Corps: semper fidelis, always faithful," said Moran, a retired Marine captain who joined Perry on his bus tour. "You see, Rick Perry has always been faithful ? faithful to his family, he has been faithful to his country, he has been faithful for more than a decade serving as our governor of Texas. He's a proven conservative."

While Perry wasn't directly challenging Gingrich's marriages, he was more than happy to twice pass the microphone to a supporter to tap that subject.

In Des Moines, Santorum expressed confidence that voters would come into his fold even though polls show him near the back of the pack.

"I'm sort of the guy at the dance, when the girls walk in they sort of walk by, and they take a few turns at the dance hall with the guys that are a little better looking, a little flashier, a little more bling," he told about 300 Nationwide Insurance employees. "But at the end of the evening, old steady Eddie's there. He's the guy you want to bring home to mom and dad."

Bachmann, too, was preparing to start her own bus tour this week, one expected to take her to all 99 counties in the state.

Bachmann, Gingrich, Perry and Santorum capped there day touting their social conservative credentials before an appreciative crowd in Des Moines at the Huckabee screening.

"We are engaged in a cultural struggle with a cultural elite that believes that life is random and has no moral meaning," Gingrich said.

Perry touted his record defunding Planned Parenthood in Texas, which he said led to four clinics shutting their doors.

Still, it was Romney's attacks ? and his newfound willingness to talk with the media ? that continued to shape the race.

"Zany is great in a campaign. It's great on talk radio. It's great in print. It makes for fun reading," Romney told The New York Times in an interview. "But in terms of a president, we need a leader, and a leader needs to be someone who can bring Americans together."

Earlier, Romney told Fox News that Gingrich had "an extraordinary lack of understanding of how the economy works." In an interview with CBS, Romney raised Gingrich's Tiffany's account and suggested that the former House speaker leveraged his name to earn a fortune after leaving office.

"Newt Gingrich has wealth from having worked in government," Romney said, in what is likely a preview of lines of attack for Thursday's debate in Sioux City.

Keen On? Walter Isaacson: No, Steve Jobs Wasn?t A Tweaker (TCTV)

stevejobsWho, exactly, was Steve Jobs? Walter Isaacson's?Steve Jobs has sparked an intriguing debate about the identity of the real Jobs. According to The New Yorker's Malcolm Gladwell, Isaacson's biography proved that Jobs was a "tweaker" - somebody who took other people's ideas and perfected them. But Apple watchers like Daring Fireball's John Gruber strongly disagreed, arguing that Jobs was anything but a tweaker and taking Isaacson to task for not telling us what Jobs "actually did" and who he was.

New tick-borne disease discovered in Sweden

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2011) ? Researchers at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy have discovered a brand new tick-borne infection. Since the discovery, eight cases have been described around the world, three of them in the Gothenburg area, Sweden.

In July 2009 a 77-year-old man from western Sweden was out kayaking when he went down with acute diarrhea, fever and temporary loss of consciousness. He was taken to hospital where it was found that he was also suffering with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Following treatment with antibiotics, he was discharged some days later with an anticoagulant to thin his blood. However, the man -- who had an impaired immune system -- went down with a fever again.

Brand new infection

Over the following months the 77-year-old was admitted as an emergency case on several occasions, but despite repeated attempts to find a microbe, and repeated doses of antibiotics, the fever returned. Finally the patient's blood underwent special analysis to look for bacterial DNA -- and that produced results. The findings matched a bacterium in an online gene bank and the results were a sensation: the man had contracted a brand new infection in humans which had never been described in the world before.

Never before seen in Sweden

The man's blood contained DNA that derived with 100% certainty from the bacterium Neoehrlichia mikurensis. This bacterium was identified for the first time in Japan in 2004 in rats and ticks but had never before been seen in Sweden in ticks, rodents or humans.

Christine Wenner?s, a doctor and researcher at the Department of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Haematology and Coagulation at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy, has been studying the case since it first came to light. Last year she was able, for the first time, to describe the newly discovered disease in a scientific article published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

"Since our discovery the bacterium has been reported in eight cases around the world, three of them in Gothenburg," says Wenner?s.

Causes DVT

All three of the Gothenburg cases involved patients with an impaired immune system, all of whom became ill during the summer months when ticks are most active.

"The nasty thing about this infection is that it causes DVT, at least in people with an impaired immune system," says Wenner?s. "This can be life-threatening. Fortunately, the infection can be treated successfully with antibiotics.

Spreads from mammals

"If the newly discovered bacterium is similar to those we already know, it has presumably spread from wild mammals to people via ticks, and it is unlikely that it can be passed on from person to person."

The mikurensis in the bacterium's name comes from the Japanese island of Mikura, where it was first discovered.

PFT: Suh unhurt after crashing car into tree

Philadelphia Eagles v New York GiantsGetty Images

Undrafted in 2010 and a reserve for nine of 11 games in 2011, Giants receiver Victor Cruz is on pace to do something very significant.

At his current rate of 87 receiving yards per game, Cruz would finish with 1,392.? And that would set the franchise single-season record.? (Amani Toomer currently holds the mark, with 1,343 yards in 2002.)

?That?s crazy man,? Cruz said, per Jeff Roberts of the Bergen Record.? ?I mean, I don?t even know how to respond, how to react to that, because it wasn?t even in my wildest dreams to even be the all-time leading receiver for the New York Giants.?

When he joined the team, Cruz hoped merely to make the roster.? ?I was just trying to find my niche on this team and just find a place, whether it be special teams or kickoff returns, just any way I could help this team out and get myself on the field, that?s what I wanted to do,? Cruz said.

He?s now 43 yards away from a 1,000-yard receiving season.

Cruz emerged as a potential star in the 2010 preseason, but a hamstring injury shut him down without a catch in his rookie regular season.? Now, he?s standing out among a group that includes Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham.? And with Manningham listed as doubtful for Sunday?s game against the Packers, look for Cruz to get even more chances.

He may even get his third career start.
