Sorry Mr. Bennett, Legalizing Drugs Wouldn't Have Saved Houston (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY| What do Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston have in common other than they are all no longer with us? Tony Bennett says they would all still be alive if we had less stringent drug laws. As reported in Fox News, Bennett made these comments at a pre-Grammy party at the Beverley Hills Hilton.

Too bad he is wrong. Jackson didn't die as a result of illegal drugs. Didn't his doctor just get sentenced for giving him legal drugs? Winehouse had no drugs in her system but died as a result of alcohol. And as of this writing, there is no cause of death for Houston, although the rumor is it was some combination of prescription drugs and alcohol, but again this is not official. So how would less strict drug laws have saved anyone or all of these entertainers?

Maybe it had something to do with the pressure we as fans put on them to always be "on" instead. We follow their every move whether they are performing or not. We build them up and can't wait until they fall so we can step on them, then if they are lucky to get back up, the cycle begins again. No, we can't blame illegal drugs for these deaths -- we can only blame ourselves. We forget entertainers are first, people, real live human beings, just like us.

Do they help their cause by their actions? Certainly not. Their public partying, drug use and all-around bad behavior can be blamed as much on them as on anyone else, but the adoring public doesn't help. Nor do the "hanger ons," who seem to collect around these people like sea gulls in a Walmart parking lot. They do whatever the entertainer wants for the fame, for the fortune, all the while claiming it is for the star.

No, less stringent drug laws wouldn't have made a difference to any of these three, nor to thousands of others. Instead let's look at ourselves and how we build these people up, then let them down when they stop selling, perhaps that is where there should be laws.
